Always in need of a "Study Buddy"

Back in the day, if you needed help in a subject, your school or teacher would set you up with a "Study Buddy" to help you along with the work and make sure you got it done.  Today, i had a "Workout Buddy"!  It was a cross-training day today and i made it to the gym--no excuses!  I did the StairMaster (which i think is the best/worst invention ever).  Its so good for you but it feels so bad when you use it!  And after that was elliptical time.  All the while i was with my best friend Erin.  It made the hour of workout go by sooooo fast!  We don't get to see each other or chat/catch up as much as we used to so this was a much needed bonding time.  Before i knew it--it was over!
On top of cardio i wanted to do some other exercises.  I"m not sure if you know this, but do you have any idea how hard it is to do virtually ANYTHING with a torn abdominal/pelvic muscle?  IMPOSSIBLE!  Everything you do involves your core and Elvis just won't allow me to.  He hurts when i do any type of exercise that uses abs.  I think Elvis was such a fitting name because he just won't die!

After today's workout I'm feeling a bit more accomplished than yesterday.  I made it to the gym, had a pretty decent pre-long run workout and am feeling ready to take on tomorrow's 14 miler.  The say that running is mostly a mental sport--if your brain says you can do it, you will do it.  I have been trying to remind myself of this everyday, particularly the days i get "the blahs" and don't want to do anything.  I'm thankful for my "Study Buddy's" that help me through my workouts and push me along and motivate me when i just can't do it myself.

If your struggling--find someone who will work out with you, run with you, and just help you along with your training.  I have a few of them and they make the world of difference!

So, who's up for a 14-er tomorrow??? .... Anyone? ... Hello? ... Sheesh...

  2. first off what did you have for lunch? Secondly start taking over counter gastro pills 20 mil (if you are not already). I prefer to not eat before any run, but like to eat during, or very light before, and if I do it is light snacks (granola bar, raisins, high protein cliff bars)very small amounts. Try running first thing in the AM (9AM) vs. mid-day. The race will be at 9AM, not at 3PM.

Also, start getting some hill work in, try the Holmdel Park X-Country course, and work it into your speed intervals work also called fartlek (Swedish for speed play).

14 miles is quite a feat, and I am very proud of both of you. Keep it up. Mike
